It was originated as a way to honor those who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, it had grown to become a day to honor all American military members who have died in the line of duty. The drop down, or length, is measured from the top center to the bottom center. The 2nd number is the width. The width is measured from the top left to the top right. For example, a 24" x 48" pleated fan is 24" length and 48" wide.
